Every day, flight crews around the world set their transponders to squawk 7700 to declare an inflight emergency. The code appears on air traffic control screens as an immediate alert, but it does not distinguish between a cabin depressurization requiring oxygen masks and an emergency descent and steam rising from a galley oven that the crew wants checked on the ground.
